For the first time, Scavini is introducing a men’s raglan coat to its autumn-winter collection, an emblematic piece of classic menswear. Recognisable by its distinctive sleeves and generous silhouette, the raglan coat embodies a particular kind of elegance: natural, comfortable and timeless.

For this first edition, we selected a 540 g/m² wool and alpaca cloth from the Austrian mill Leichtfried Loden, while paying close attention to the practical details inherited from traditional outerwear.

The raglan coat, a menswear classic

The raglan coat takes its name from Lord Raglan, the nineteenth-century British officer traditionally associated with this particular sleeve construction.

Unlike a conventional set-in sleeve, the raglan sleeve extends all the way to the neckline, eliminating the usual shoulder seam. This construction allows greater freedom of movement and creates the soft line characteristic of traditional raglan coats.

Especially valued for its comfort, this type of coat is naturally suited to layering. Its generous cut allows it to be worn over a suit or tweed jacket just as easily as over a substantial knit.

That versatility is precisely what appealed to us: an elegant coat without undue formality, able to complement a wide range of winter outfits.

A wool and alpaca cloth by Leichtfried Loden

For our first raglan coat, we selected a 540 g/m² wool and alpaca cloth from the Austrian mill Leichtfried Loden, renowned for its expertise in woollen fabrics.

The combination of wool and alpaca creates a cloth with a rich texture, a pleasant handle and a supple drape. Its weight gives the coat excellent structure while retaining the fluidity required to follow the movement of the raglan sleeves.

This choice of cloth reflects our attachment to fine materials, which are the starting point for every garment we make.

Practical details inherited from traditional outerwear

A fine coat must naturally provide protection from the cold, but it must also answer the practical needs of everyday life. With this in mind, we incorporated several functional details inspired by tailoring and traditional outerwear.

A collar that can be raised to protect the neck

Discreetly concealed beneath the collar, a hidden fastening tab keeps it raised and closed when temperatures fall.

It provides additional protection against wind and cold by covering more of the neck. Invisible when not in use, it preserves the coat’s clean lines.

Adjustable cuff tabs

The sleeves feature buttoned adjustment tabs that allow the opening at the wrist to be tightened.

Borrowed from traditional coats, this detail helps keep out cold air while adding character to the garment.

An additional fastening against the elements

At the bottom of the coat, a small buttoned tab draws the two fronts together and holds them in place.

Particularly useful when the wind rises, it limits the coat’s opening and improves protection against the weather.

Genuine horn buttons and a concealed fastening

We chose a concealed front fastening to preserve a restrained, elegant silhouette.

The buttons are made from genuine horn, a natural material that we also favour on many pieces throughout our ready-to-wear collection.

Pockets designed for everyday life

A winter coat must also carry personal belongings with ease while remaining genuinely comfortable to use.

On the outside, our raglan coat has two large pockets lined in cotton flannel. Soft and pleasant to the touch, the fabric provides an extra feeling of warmth when you slip your hands inside, a particularly welcome detail on cold days.

A smaller pocket built into the right-hand pocket provides a convenient place for keys and other small items.

Inside, two upper pockets secured with a button keep personal belongings close at hand.

Finally, a deep newspaper pocket positioned low on the left side recalls the coats of the past. Originally intended to hold a newspaper, it can equally accommodate a compact umbrella, a scarf, a pair of gloves or other accessories.

From the cotton flannel pocketing to the arrangement of the internal storage, every detail serves a precise purpose: to make an elegant coat as comfortable as it is practical.

How to wear a raglan coat in winter

One of the raglan coat’s greatest strengths is its versatility.

Over a suit, its generous cut preserves ease across the shoulders and naturally accommodates the volume of a tailored jacket.

With a tweed jacket or flannel trousers, it creates a classic winter silhouette built around texture and fine materials.

For a more relaxed outfit, it can be worn over a Shetland wool jumper with corduroy trousers or denim.

The raglan coat thus bridges the gap between formal tailoring and everyday clothing without ever losing its character.

Our first raglan coat, in a very limited edition

With this new model, we wanted to recapture the spirit of the great traditional coats: a generous cut, a wool and alpaca cloth, careful finishing and details whose usefulness reveals itself season after season.

Offered in very limited quantities, this first edition embodies our vision of menswear: garments designed to be worn, appreciated and kept for many years.

Some fabrics instantly evoke a particular season. Linen calls to mind the warmer days, while tweed transports us to the English countryside, among heather-covered moors and rain-soaked paths. Flannel, meanwhile, almost single-handedly…
